DIY Party Favours with the Foil Quill Freestyle Pens

Happy March, everyone!  It’s Rebecca with you, bringing something fun your way, thanks to the Freestyle Foil Pens.  My daughter’s 7th birthday is this month and I was able to quickly customise favours for her party using the pens.

She’s very into Disney’s The Descendants and she’s invited both boys and girls to the party, so the favours needed to be neutral.  She picked out Squishies (tiny squishible animals) and we thought Ring Pops and Pop Rocks would be fitting to go with the theme in terms of colours, which I’ve loosely integrated into the project.  If you don’t know, the Descendants are the children of Disney villains and the colours are as you might expect–purple, green, blue–very villainous!  Thankfully, I could match them to my foil–the Peacock foil packs are perfect for this project!

I started by choosing some gift bags that would fit 2 Squishies and a ring pop; I saved the Pop Rocks for the outside of the package.  I found these bags from Wilton and thought it would be fun to decorate them a bit, too, which is possible with the Freestyle pens.

You can choose which thickness you like best, but I favoured the standard tip (aqua) over the others for a couple of reasons.  The fine tip pen was too fine, especially on the bags, which are a thin material.  The bold tip was good, but the coverage on the bag was a bit spotty and for the tags, it was too thick for the message I was writing.  Had I just written one or two words on it, I probably would have opted for it instead.

I decided on adding a few coloured stripes to the tops of the plastic goodie bags.  I made a quick insert to place inside the bag to keep the lines from scratching the backside of the bag (I learned this after the first couple go-rounds!).  The Foil Quill mat with the magnets is a must-have–it’s such a huge help in keeping the foil in place while you’re using the pens.

I found that it was best to go from top to bottom when making the lines for the stripes, and it’s always good to go slowly to ensure the foil adheres fully to the surface.  When I was done, I set the bags aside to create some personalised tags for them.

I chose fuchsia and green card stocks with silver foil to create the tags.  Again, the Magnetic Mat works so well.  I placed a tag die over the foil to use as a guide as I wrote the message with the Freestyle Pen.  You can cut out the tags first, of course, but in terms of placement, I found this method worked better for me.

I carefully wrote “You made my party ROCK” with the guest’s name and a few easy doodles.  After I had all sentiments complete, I cut them out with my Mini Evolution and the tag die.

I packaged up the contents in the bags, closing them with the silver twist-ties that came with the bags, and tying some twine around them, clipping a small clothespin to the twine before tying a bow at the back of the package.  I attached a packet of Pop Rocks and a tag to the bag and they were complete!  The little bits of foiled stripes are the perfect topping for this fun little favour.

A few tips:

You can use any foil colours and/or theme with this idea by tailoring them to suit your party needs.  This one works for both boys and girls but is completely customisable.

Choose your own message or just write a simple ‘thank you for coming’–the Freestyle Pens make this part convenient; you could even write something different on each tag!

If your child is old enough, they can draw a picture or write the sentiment themselves.

If you don’t feel comfortable writing with the pens, don’t forget that you can foil the tags with the Foil Quill cartridges and your electronic cutting machines instead.
